The Crown Plaza Hotel was the host venue of the Miss City of Port of Spain Pageant which took place on Sunday 6th August, 2006. This pageant was just one of the many activities put on by the Port of Spain Corporation to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the restoration of civic rights to the city of Port of Spain. Each of the delegates represented one of the twelve electoral districts in the vicinity of Port of Spain and did their best to showcase their intelligence and beauty.
Although the show commenced about forty minutes after the advertised time, things ran quickly along afterward, possibly to compensate for the late start. The twelve delegates came out to the front of the stage and introduced themselves, the area they represented and their sponsors. In this introductory segment, 'Colour Me Caribbean – Folk Cabaret' the delegates appeared in eighteenth century type Caribbean wear, revealing elements of a colonial past fused with a modern-day Caribbean flavour. At this time, the Mayor of Port of Spain, His Worship Alderman Murchison Brown, took time to enter the stage to share a few words of welcome.
The judges were then formally introduced. They were: Michael Phillips, Marcia Henville, Samson Nanton, Dale Enoch, Sharon Hamilton Cudjoe and Chief Judge, Dr. Jean Campbell.
Several guest artists appeared in the competition, including Ms. Tashika Hudlin who gave an excellent rendition of Keyshia Cole's, "Love" and the Clico Shiv Shaki Dancers who offered a breathtaking performance as usual.
The delegates appeared in their whole bathing suits swimwear by the Inn Collection which showcased the bodies of the contestants for judging. They also appeared in the cultural wear of Trinidad and Tobago, showing blends from all over the world that directly influenced style in the country in the 'Brown Gyul in de Ring' portion of the show.
Later on that evening, the delegates then presented the much anticipated evening wear in the segment, 'Cutting Style' which showed off the great talents of our local designers.
While the girls were on stage showing off their fashionable garments to the audience and to the judges, Garvin Rogers serenaded the delegates with his smooth voice and romantic melodies. It was indeed very entertaining and exciting for the audience and in particular for the delegates to be serenaded by him. The girls could not help but blush whenever he drew close to them from time to time.
The question and answer portion of the show, 'Up Close and Personal with the Miss City of Port of Spain Delegates' or 'Tete a Tete' gave the audience and the judges a chance to hear the girls answer questions intelligently and quickly, which most of the girls handled fairly.
Brother Resistance was the first to appear after the intermission. His songs, "Mother Earth" and "Ring de Bell" added a cool vibe to appeal to the senses by providing an educational and uplifting message.
A fashion presentation by Mannequins followed which featured designs from the designers of the competition. This fashion presentation allowed members of the audience to witness a live runway performance, allowing them to get a taste of what occurs in the fashion industry.
After the entertainment, some of the results were released. They were:
Miss Personality – Nikesha Jones
Miss Totally Together – Nikesha Jones
Most Disciplined – Danielle Hamilton
Miss Photogenic- Danielle Hamilton
Miss Elegant- Nicolla Sammy Ifill
Miss Physique- Gabriella Diaz
Best Cultural Wear-Dionne Durity
Best Folk Wear- Ezra Bailey
Best Evening Wear- Danielle Hamilton
Miss Congeniality-Sasiya Albert
The band Surge, all dressed in white, provided entertainment after those results that appealed mainly to the 12-25 age group with their hit crowd favourite, "In Your Timing". However, the older folks did appreciate their performance as well, especially with the presentation of their new song, "Why?"
After the final walk by Miss City of Port of Spain 2004, Miss Keisha Sealy, the audience knew that the time was near to crown the new Miss City of Port of Spain. The results of the Miss City of Port of Spain 2006 are:
2nd runner up – Nichola Sammy Ifill
1st runner up-Nikesha Jones
Winner of the 2006 Miss City of Port of Spain Pageant- Danielle Hamilton
This event, which was well orchestrated down the last detail, was very classy and remarkable. However, a clear stage would have been more appropriate to accommodate picture taking and to prevent the obstruction of the audience's view.
