The Port of Spain Corporation held their City Day Civic Reception recently on Thursday June 26th, 2008, at the City Hall in commemoration of the 94th anniversary of the restoration of Municipal Rights to the City of Port of Spain. In the audience for this occasion were the Mayor of Port of Spain Murchison Brown and aldermen and councillors who comprise the Port of Spain Corporation. The City Hall was beautifully decorated with glowing fountains designed by Kenneth Atwell Creations, so much so, that one councillor remarked that it was the first time that he had seen the City Hall looking so beautiful.

After the invocation dance by Kerry Ann Sealy, presenter Jemma Jordan introduced CEO of the Port of Spain Corporation, Loraine Alexander on stage to deliver the welcoming address. Mrs. Alexander highlighted the theme of this year's commemoration, "Delivering on the Vision", to be the model of local governance dedicated to sustainable development. She briefly highlighted the various physical development projects that are going on in the city, such as the waterfront project but emphasized the importance of connecting with the average people who traverse the streets of Port of Spain on a day to day basis.

The Mayor of Port of Spain also addressed the audience as he also highlighted the development project in the capital city. However, he made mention of vagrancy, unsanitary conditions, deficiency in the repair of facilities and local government reform as the main challenges facing the Port of Spain Corporation.

Gary Hunt, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs delivered the feature address and he apologised for the absence of the Prime Minister Patrick Manning. Noting that it was by mere accident that Port of Spain became the capital city, Minister Hunt went on to congratulate the mayor and the councillors for their contributions towards the development of Port of Spain.

Tenille Herbert gave an exciting monologue titled "Talk Yuh Talk", originally done by Miguel Browne, that celebrated the expressions of Trini dialect. According to Tenille, 'Trini talk' is not bad English but just a special way Trinis talk, that is reflective of our identity.

The entertainment continued with an exciting display on the Tenor Pan by Mia Gormandy who played Kitchener's immortal "Pan in A Minor". Joline John drew rapturous applause from the audience with her rendition of a gospel song made popular by Yolanda Adams. Rounding off the performances was Augustus Mitchell, the recent winner of the Port of Spain Talented Teens Competition who delighted the audience with a rendition of "She's Royal".

On the evening, awards were given in five categories: Business, Community Service, Education, Public Service and Sport. In the Business Category, Bewill and Company Ltd. and Colonial Fire and General Insurance Company Ltd. were the awardees; in the Community Service Category Locksley Alleyne, Errol Fabien and the St. James Working Council were the awardees; in the Education category, the University of the West Indies was the sole recipient; in the Public Service Category, the Child Welfare League of Trinidad and Tobago, the Port of Spain General Hospital and the St. Dominic Children's Home were the awardees; while in the final category of Sport, the Maple Club and the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation were the awardees.

After the presenter read the biographies of the awardees and presented them with their awards, the awardees, councillors and other guests mingled as light refreshments were shared. Also on hand were the delegates in the Miss City of Port of Spain Pageant, who were introduced to the audience.
