Pan Night, part of the Emancipation 2006 series was held on Friday, 28th July, 2006. Many assembled at the Lidj Yasu Omowale Village, located at the Jean Pierre Complex, to pay homage to the steelpan instrument which was born out of the struggle to maintain the African drum beating tradition and to express themselves using the avenue of song.
The Village was packed with pan lovers that night who came to support their favourite pan sides. However, because the space was not properly thought out, the people had to squeeze themselves together adding more heat and discomfort to the environment.
Although they were treated to the pan music, they also were able to navigate the Village and purchase African items made by Africans in the Continent and the Diaspora. In addition, people were welcomed to the art exhibition which displayed art and sculptures from Africans all over the world and showcased the inventions by Africans that may not have been known otherwise.
The entertainment on this night was provided by the Sadiki Sticks on Steel Orchestra; PCS Starlift Steel Orchestra; Renegades Steel Orchestra; Lydian Choir with Steel; Couva Joylanders Orchestra; and Phase II Steelband Orchestra.
The crowd truly appreciated the musical splendor created by the steelpan instrument and celebrated until after the midnight hour.
