Statement by His Excellency Professor George Maxwell Richards, TC. CMT. Ph.D. President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on the death of Boxing Champion Jizelle Salandy
The entire country and I are deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely death of Ms Jizelle Salandy, this country's champion female boxer.
It was shortly before her last encounter on Friday December 26th, 2008, that Jizelle and her Manager, Mr. Buxo Potts visited me. During that visit, we were all filled with hope and confidence, and we discussed her future in the international ring. I impressed upon Jizelle and Mr. Potts the need for constant training, dedication and also of paramount importance, the need to study the techniques of her future opponents carefully before each actual event. Her success in the ring was an outstanding victory, which we all celebrated.
Jizelle was a true patriot; national hero, sporting icon and role model. She clearly did not fit the stereotype of the typical boxer. She was a warm and gentle lady, full of compassion for her fellow human beings.
My wife Jean and I express our deepest sympathy to Jizelle's family and we wish Ms.Tamara Watson, the other occupant of the vehicle a speedy recovery.

Prime Minister Patrick Manning pays respect to the Salandy family on behalf of the Government
The passing of young Giselle Salandy has filled the nation with great saddness, and I would like to take the opportunity to express the deepest sympathies of the government and people of Trinidad and Tobago to the family of this treasured daughter of the soil.
Miss Salandy wasted little time in her short life, in making all aware of her value and her capacity for success and for putting Trinidad and Tobago on the international arena not only with her boxing skills, but also, with her discipline and commitment to being a role model for young people. She was indeed a great patriot and exemplar. The government and people of Trinidad and Tobago are poorer for Giselle's tragic, unfortunate and untimely passing.
The regrettable accident which took the life of this youthful athlete brings sharply into focus the need for us to embrace our loved ones, to reward the hard working among us for their efforts and to cherish every moment that we have on earth. As we mourn for her, this surely must make us all reflect on our relationship with Almighty God since the gift of life is neither certain nor enduring. Miss Salandy has been described as precious, committed, talented, focused and determined, we are so proud that we had the short lived opportunity to be exposed to Giselle's talents.
The government and people Trinidad and Tobago remember Miss Salandy's family and pray that they find solace in this their time of grief.
