Traffik, Laventille Rhythm Section to perform at Soca Fantasy
Posted: Monday, February 2, 2004

By Terry Joseph, Trinidad Express

The fete, which begins at noon, also features as guest artistes Shurwayne Winchester, Roger George, Maximus Dan, Militant, Benjai, Lovely, Pelf & Augusta, US-based DJs God Bless and Crazy Beenie, local transplant Papa Rocky, 98.9 FM spinners Magnificent Sounds and Executive Class and Matsimela the Shepherd; with MC Wassy on hand to work the expected crowd.

The identity of the single-pan band listed to play at the fete hangs in jeopardy, as the group first contacted is likely to be in that category's final of Panorama, which also has its playoff on February 20.

Local Soca Fantasy coordinator for producers Positive Party People Inc, Tony Phillips, who has been shuttling between here and New York, putting the event in place, said the fete is already selling far beyond initial expectation in North America, where tickets are priced at US$50.

The food fare features cuisine indigenous to the Las Cuevas area and prepared largely by villagers, those dishes including fish broth, grilled fish, rice and peas, corn soup, doubles, bake and shark, various treatments of pork and chicken and a special 'ital' section for vegetarians and those of non-meat persuasion.

Transportation shuttles will be provided for patrons who wish to park their vehicles in Maraval or Port of Spain proper and part proceeds from the event are earmarked for an orphanage in north Trinidad.

"A number of entertainment celebrities who will be in Trinidad for Carnival are expected to attend after hearing some of the music in New York," Phillips said. "We have confirmation from some of the group and are waiting to get a 'yes' from several others before making the announcement."
