Exodus Tops Large Bands: The Standings
Posted: Wednesday, February 4, 2004

By Terry Joseph

EXODUS Steel Orchestra justified its decision to relinquish the customary byes available to defending National Panorama champs by performing its way to the top spot in the top spot in the large conventional orchestra category at last weekend's preliminary round.

Bands in three categories – large, medium and small – were judged in their panyards each night from January 29 to February 2. This marked the first time conventional orchestras were seeded for the annual contest.

Among the large bands, Tunapuna-based Exodus mustered 273 points to lead its category by just one point over ten-time champion Witco Desperadoes, with "dark horse" Solo Pan Knights and bpTT Renegades chalking up 263 points to tie at third spot. The 14 semi-finalists are separated from top to trailing edge by a mere 23 points.

"It is a very slim lead," Exodus manager Ainsworth Mohammed said yesterday, "one that makes the contest much more intense, as bands near the top will be pushing extra hard and we, knowing that, will be working even harder to maintain position through the semi-final."

Bands performing in the large and medium categories will have their semi-final play-off on Sunday at the Queen's Park Savannah. Beginning at 11 a.m., 14 bands from each grouping will come before the jury, vying for one of eight spots available to each category at Carnival Saturday night's final.

Among the medium bands, Valley Harps led the pack with 264 points, topping Parry's Pan School by two. A tie between Deltones and Harmonites (261) and another for fifth position between Excellent Stores Silver Stars and Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille (259), plus two more ties in the bands selected, makes their contest even closer, with just 14 points separating as many bands.

The Diego Martin Merrytones' triumph in the small bands category with 271 is also a close call, as Tipica is just three points south, although the spread in this grouping is more relaxed further down the line and the leader enjoys a clear 35 points advantage over Moods and Panatics, who tied at the trailing edge.
