Geraldo Vieira Junior and Alana Ward are so far the best Carnival King and Queen for North Trinidad, the National Carnival Bandleaders Association (NCBA) said yesterday.
This zonal ranking was made within the wider national competition for the Carnival King and Queen Preliminaries held on Thursday night at the Queens Park Savannah. Some 36 Kings and 39 Queens paraded, from North, South, Central and East Trinidad, of whom 16 each advanced to next week's Semi-Finals. Vieira portrayed "Alladin's Last Ride" of Trini Revellers' band, 'Arabian Nights.' As Vieira danced he made a turbaned figure sway atop a huge, plumed bird.
Second-placed was Curtis Eustace with "Drums of Freedom" from Legends' band, 'Freedom.' This huge spread of green at its centre had a lanky figure with bobbing buttocks. Third was Legends' Wade Madray with "De Origin." It showed the hands of God, with painting of the ascent of man by evolution and the fall of Adam and Eve in Eden. Fourth came Roland St George. He had made a huge impact with his towering genie called "Bling Bling Lamassu - The Wishmaster," from Trini Revellers' band 'Arabian Nights.' Fifth was Theophilus Simmons with a fancy Indian, "Darius, Ruler of Persia."
The other Semi-Final Kings are Matthew Alexis with "The Magic Dwelling of Papa Bois"; Clyde Bascombe with "D' Cage of D' Golden Pheasant"; Fareid Carvalho with "Dreamscape"; Stephen David and "Mama Dis is Mas"; Andre De Freitas with "Che-Low and the Magical Spirits"; Dave Lakhan's "The Winged Messenger"; Juan Maximo and "King Ferdinand"; Zinool Mohammed's "We Music"; Ansel Price with "Sango, the Cosmic Dancer"; Leroy Prieto with "Pekokatoo"; and Rupert Sherry Joseph with "Chief Great Owl." The top North Zone Queens in rank were Legends' Alana Ward with "If You Love Something Set it Free"; Colleen Corridon with "Midnight at the Oasis" from Trini Revellers; Inez Gould's "The Enchanted Tree" of Trini Revellers''; Legends' Pamela Gordon and "D' Dance of Freedom"; and Susan Low with 'The Man in the Moon is a Lady" from 'A Band for All Seasons.'
Other Queen Semi-Finalists are: Lee Ann Bailey with "Spirit of Rhythm"; Arlene Belgrave with "Queen Anne of Imperial Spain"; Gloria Dallsingh and "Spirit of Pan"; Denise Duncan and "Isis, Lady of the Nile"; Rosemarie Kuru-Jagessar with "Wahi-Mana, Mystic Dancer"; Peola Marchan's "Gladiatrix"; Joan Mohammed and "Melange"; Marlene Moraldo with "Queen Isabella"; Deborah Nandah and "The Enchanted Dove"; Nicole Parker with "Goddess of the Jungle"; and Tamara Shillingford with "Worshipper of the Sun."
