PORT of Spain Mayor Murchison Brown will this morning proclaim Calypso Dreams Week in tribute to the documentary film of the same name and related activities.
The three main components of Calypso Dreams Week are tomorrow night's premiere of the film at 7 p.m. at Movie Towne, Port of Spain, live performance of soundtrack music by a cast led by the Mighty Sparrow at Hotel Normandie Under the Trees on Wednesday night and a special San Fernando premiere at Naparima Bowl on Thursday.
American producers Geoffrey Dunn and Michael Horne flew into Trinidad for the reading of Brown's proclamation and will stay for the premiere and related activities. Co-producers Alvin Daniell and Lord Superior will be on hand for the ceremony. Superior has also put together Wednesday night's show at The Normandie.
SShot entirely on location in Trinidad, Calypso Dreams has been hailed at international film festivals (in Mill Valley last December and on February 7 at the Pan African Film Festival in California) and attracted flattering reviews from the industry's most discerning critics. The documentary-styled movie traces the history of calypso through the eyes of today's veterans and pays tribute to those who recently passed on.
It features testimonials from the Mighty Sparrow, Lord Superior, Brother Valentino, Warlord Blakie, Lord Pretender, Black Stalin, Bomber and an exclusive (and highly informative) interview with Harry Belafonte, priceless historical clips, including Nat "King" Cole singing calypso and Kitchener's arrival in England.
Narrative is provided by David Rudder, Brother Resistance and Dr. Hollis Liverpool (Chalkdust); with extensive comment from Calypso Rose, Sparrow, Brother Valentino and Prentender.
