Norman Darway launches book on Pan

Mr. Norman Adam Darway launched his book, Stories in Steel: A True Account of the Invention and Emergence of the Steelband Movement, at St James Amphitheatre, Western Main Road, on the 31st May 2005.
The launch of this book was the culmination of years of research into the history of Trinidad and Tobago's prized national instrument and the nation's culture.
Stories in Steel is a narrative about the origins of the steelpan and the evolution of the steelband movement from its earliest notorious origins, told in a unique blend of first person accounts and extracts from the media of the day.
Darway was a member of the Invaders Steel Orchestra, and one of the select few who can claim to have witnessed the evolution of the steelpan first hand, through his direct association with icons such as Ellie Mannette and others.
The programme, which was hosted by Peter Ray Blood, was opened by Brother Noble Khan. Mr. Joseph Donowa then gave welcoming remarks on behalf of Jhullian Graphics and St. James Community Improvement Committee. Other speakers included Mr. Junior Howell who gave greetings on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Keith Byer, the acting President of Pan Trinbago, Mr. Finbar Ryan, the Director of Culture who gave the feature address, Mr. Keith Diaz, the Chairman of Northern Region Pan Trinbago who gave the vote of thanks and Mayor Murchison Brown who gave the closing address.
Eddy Yearwood displayed his aptitude as well as his appreciation for the outstanding work of Mr. Darway by presenting a tribute in song. Mr. Esmond King also presented an Ose gift to Mr. Darway at the launch which symbolized his admiration and respect for the important work documented by Darway. The event was indeed a success as it received positive reception by those in attendance.
Autographed copies of Stories in Steel will be available to persons who donate $50.00US and over to the development of our ongoing historical projects.
