Calypso tents set to open January 27
Posted: Sunday, December 4, 2005

By Joan Rampersad

The majority of calypso tents are on course to open their doors on January 27, 2006. Auditions are close to completion with just the Revue to end its final session on December 11. Once again the Revue will be stationed at the SWWTU Hall on Wrightson Road with headliners Sugar Aloes, Panther, Denyse Plummer, Baron, Skatie and Devon Seales. However, at the Mas Camp Pub yesterday, at the final audition for the Klassic Ruso Tent, calypsonians Revealer and Typher are set to make big impacts on their audiences when they deliver "Morality Gone" and "Arm Yourself" respectively.

The latter song in particular is expected to be a hit with any crowd next year. Chairman of TUCO North Zone, Mark John (Contender), said that 25 calypsonians would form part of the final cast that will be headlined by himself, All-Rounder, Lady Wonder and Shirlane, Versatile, Manchild, Brother Ebony and Almanac. That tent will be based at the Kavemar Pub on Henry Street, Port-of-Spain. Contender said too, there is a challenge that is on every year as to which TUCO-run tent is the best during each Carnival season. He feels that Klassic Ruso was best this year and added that they intend to maintain its high standard to beat the other tents — Kaiso House, Kaiso Karavan and Kaiso Showkase as well as those from Tobago, Eastern Stars and Power House.

Apart from Revealer and Typher, others making favourable impressions were Alicia Massy with "The Hardest Hard," Intruder with "Think About The Country" Stanley Adams with "Three-minute Fathers" Astro with "Youth of the Nation Need Direction," Simple with "FBI," Nicole de Coteau with "Lost Paradise," Durango with "One Caribbean" and King Pro with "From Strength to Strength."
