"... the biggest one ever."
MASMAN Mike "Big Mike" Antoine took his band LEGACY to yesterday's Jouvert celebrations in Point Fortin and was one of the big attractions of the day with an assortment of costumes that added colour and excitement to the district's annual Borough Day festivities.
The event, which attracted thousands of revellers, was described by Mayor St Clair Natta as, "A bumper celebration ... the biggest one ever."
The action got going from as early as 2 am with popular brass band Roy Cape All Stars and soca stars Iwer George, Ronnie Mc Intosh and Mista Vybe, among those providing musical accompaniment for the celebrations. Approximately 20 bands paraded through the streets of Point Fortin, including a CEPEP band led by SWMCOL CEO Ray Braithwaite.
The event was dominated by portrayals of the Soca Warriors, this country's national football team, which has qualified for World Cup 2006. In support of the team, which is heading to the finals in Germany next month, several revellers wore red, white and black souvenir clothing.
Yesterday's activities climaxed one week of Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations. Mayor Natta told Sunday Newsday the celebrations were the biggest ever "It was surely bigger than last year's. It was well attended."
Natta said there was an increased police presence, including officers from the Inter-Agency Task Force.
