A wide cross-section of the nation came out in their red, white and black to celebrate Independence Day on Thursday 31st August, 2006. This year marked the 44th anniversary of this event and was celebrated by thousands ranging from the very young to the very old.
Members of the public came early to the Queen's Park Savannah to witness the very formal Independence Day march. The dignitaries arrived one after the other ending with the arrival of the President of Trinidad and Tobago, His Excellency, George Maxwell Richards.
After President George Maxwell Richards alighted from the vehicle, he was accompanied by the Chief of Defense Staff, Brig Ancil Antoine, aide-de-camp Lt Cdr D Archer and a mounted escort, and taken to a podium for the presidential salute.
The President, on the invitation of Parade commander Col. E. E Dillon, inspected the parade in line with the protocol of the event. After the inspection, they marched around the paved section of the Queen's Park Savannah to show off to the large crowd of enthusiastic onlookers.
The parade at the Queen's Park Savannah ended after the 21 gun salute. The various sections of the march journeyed to the King George IV Park and not the usual Police Barracks in St. James because it was under renovation. The crowd, demonstrating their patriotism and support, also made the journey to the Park enduring the merciless heat of the sun.
Later that evening, and in keeping with the traditions of the Independence Day celebrations, was the Presidential award-giving ceremony for those in the country that had demonstrated their exceptionalism. The ceremony began promptly at 6.00 p.m and proved to be an interesting aspect of the Independence Day celebrations.
It was noticeable this year that none were deemed worthy to receive the nation's highest award, the Trinity Cross. Maybe some remarkable and outstanding character would be so fortunate next year.
The Independence Day celebrations ended with a display of fireworks which, yet again, left spectators spell-bound.
