The National Flour Mills of Trinidad and Tobago presented a two day sugar craft and cake exhibition themed "In My Garden", at the St. John's Ambulance Hall, Woodbrook, Port of Spain on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September, 2006. The TriniView.com crew visited the exhibition on Saturday and was pleased to witness the great artistry and skill of the sugar craft and cake designers on site.
Exhibitors were selected from all over Trinidad and competitors were granted the choice of entering at least two of the following types in competition: Royal Iced Cakes, Rolled or Poured Fondant with Gum Paste or a combination of the above. Those entering the live competition were judged on speed, impact, construction and design, base and workstation . Those who had their artwork on exhibition were judged on appearance, symmetrical and balanced designs, properly placed flowers/decorations and ornaments, visual impact/colour combinations, innovation, use of techniques and use of theme.
The host of the evening, Ms. Cheryl Edwards, opened the formal part of the event by welcoming guests to the exposition after the tasks of registration and set up were completed.
The feature address was presented by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Flour Mills, Mr. Neil Rolingson. He shared with the audience his great pleasure in being present at the sugar craft and cake exhibition - the first of its kind in the country - and hoped that this kind of forum for the demonstration of artistic ability continues for years to come. He stressed the importance of events such as these as a unifying force bringing together people who have made significant contributions to the food industry. Further, he intimated that this type of exposure also allows for a greater networking between these crafters and the NFM and can be an avenue to discover talent.
After Mr. Rolingson's speech was a brief address by Mr. Keith Chin, Director of Marketing of the National Flour Mills. He basically greeted guests for coming out and thanked those involved in the production of the event.
The event was formalized by the much anticipated cutting of the ribbon which signaled that guests could now examine the sugar craft and cake exhibition.
Cakes of all descriptions were on display, each decorated with iced sugar and lovely patterns that one may not have thought possible using flour and sugar and guests were absolutely in awe by the breathtaking displays. Some were even tempted to steal a taste of the scrumptious displays while others believed that the designs on the cakes were too intricate and mesmerizing to tamper with and made extra effort to stay clear of the artwork.
People could scarcely move between and among each other as the hall was thick with spectators. Many took pictures to preserve the images on display while others took note mentally gazing lustfully at the amazing art work.
Following the live entertainment by performers such as Jerome, Dr. Mills, Stacy Charles and Curtis, live sugar craft demonstrations by veteran sugar crafters Mrs. Stephanie Evelyn and Mrs. Irma Hannays took place. The audience listened and observed with great intensity in the hope that they too could learn the tricks of the trade.
After the final segment of the evening, 'Modeling with sugar', guests left the site with nothing but sweet things on their minds.
