Jazz Artists on the Greens 2012
On March 24th, 2012, the 10th Annual Jazz Artists on the Greens (JAOTG) was held at the WASA Grounds, Farm Road, St. Joseph. This event, which was organised by Production One Limited, showcased the talent of five artists, incorporating various musical styles as well as a regional flavour.
Chinese Ambassador Hosts 2011 Spring Festival Reception
On January 28, 2011, guests of H.E. Mr. Yang Youming, Chinese Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, and his wife Mrs. Geng Hailing experienced a taste of China at their residence in celebration of the New Year which officially begins on 3rd February in 2011. This celebration, more popularly referred to as the Spring Festival, is the major event celebrated in China because it is a time when family, wherever they are, return home to engage in the festivities.
Pundit Dr. Parasram Maharaj Speaks about the Phagwa Festival
On Saturday 28th February, 2010, the Mc Bean Ramleela and Cultural Group hosted the Phagwa celebrations at the Lower Mc Bean Recreational Ground in Couva. During the early morning preparations for the day’s event, Hindu Pundit Dr. Parasram Maharaj took time out from his busy schedule to share a bit of history and meaning of the Hindu festival of Phagwa from its origins in India to its colourful manifestations in Trinidad and Tobago.
Maha Saba Children’s Phagwa 2010
A kaleidoscope of colour and brightness, reminiscent of youth, innocence and vibrance was witnessed yesterday at the Sanatan Dharma Maha Saba Children’s Phagwa celebrated at the Tunapuna Hindu School. Hundreds of students from various Hindu schools from all over Trinidad assembled to experience the delight of Phagwa and the fun of splashing each other with abeer with the dominant colours being purple, red, green, blue, pink, orange and yellow.
Mc Bean Ramleela Phagwa Celebrations 2010
The Hindu festival of Phagwa was celebrated throughout Trinidad as people journeyed to different venues to partake of this fun-filled, colourful festival on Sunday 28th February. Known also as Holi or the Festival of Colours, Phagwa is celebrated throughout many communities across Trinidad, where the throwing of coloured powder and coloured water on each other, forms a central part of the festival.
‘Paramin’ Parang Festival 2009
On December 18, 2009, Paramin Parang Festival moved from its traditional Paramin home to the Trinidad Country Club in Maraval. This album depicts the bands and artistes that performed as well as scenes from the crowd during the night’s proceedings.
Divali Celebrations in Plum Mitan
The Ram Nagar Shiva Mandir in Plum Mitan held a cultural show at the community grounds on October 9th 2009, as part of their Divali celebration. Despite the inclement weather, people from the community came out to witness the talent within the community. Children and their parents lighted deyas and interacted in the park right before the show.
Remembering Kelvin ‘Mighty Duke’ Pope
Departed Calypso icon the Mighty Duke (Kelvin Pope) got a true Kaiso send off in his home town of Point Fortin on Thursday 22nd January, 2009, at Coronation Park. Duke’s family, including his wife Rebecca and his children Wendell, Makeda, Kurt and Ossasie, friends as well as many members of the Calypso fraternity, were on hand to celebrate the life and times of the Mighty Duke.
Hosay in St. James
The commemoration of Hosay is a Shiite Muslim commemoration of the death of Imam Hussein and his brother Hassan (both grandsons of the Prophet Muhammad) at the Battle of Kerbala in Persia, now known as Iraq. The word Hosay comes from the name ‘Hussein’. Elsewhere in the Islamic world, on the day of Ashura, Shiites also commemorate the death of Imam Hussein.
Seventh Annual Orisa Rain Festival
This festival took place in the Shrine Gardens, Upper Gasparillo Rd., Santa Cruz, Trinidad. Participants from the U.S., Jamaica, Cuba, Bermuda, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago also took part in this Orisa festival. The Rain Festival brings people together to celebrate rebirth, commitment, understanding and responsibility in a physical and spiritual sense. The Rain Cycle serves to sensitise the entire nation of the importance and sacredness of the rain.
