South Africa’s Freedom Day 2015
On Monday 27th April, 2015, the High Commission of South Africa to Trinidad and Tobago joined the rest of the world in celebrating Freedom Day in South Africa.
This occasion, which took place at the Cascadia Hotel, St. Ann’s, marked the twenty-first anniversary of the country’s first elections where all persons of the voting age of eighteen years and older, regardless of race, could exercise their right to vote. Although the legal framework for apartheid was abolished in the South African parliament on June 17th, 1991, the 1994 election is seen as a crucial step towards improving racial equality.
In Trinidad, celebrations took place under the auspices of Her Excellency Maureen Modiselle and included guests from the government of Trinidad and Tobago, representatives of various embassies, members of the business community, and other friends and well-wishers.
Her Excellency Maureen Modiselle in her address assured guests that despite the many issues still to be ironed out, South Africa is indeed a beautiful place and invited all to visit.
She also gave an historical account leading up to the fateful elections of 1994 as well as mentioned some of the developments that occurred during the reign of Nelson Mandela.
Those in attendance had the opportunity to sample various South African wines, several delicacies and were also treated to the wonderful sounds of pan music from the Siparia Deltones Steel Orchestra.
